Weekend Trivia: What Is The Quasi Universal Intergalactic Denomination?
While the US dollar tries to hold on as the world currency of choice, the "Quasi Universal Intergalactic Denomination" has been developed as the new currency for space travellers.
Otherwise know as the Quid, the BBC is reporting that the new currency was "designed for the foreign exchange company Travelex by scientists from the National Space Centre and the University of Leicester."
The Quids are made of the polymer best-known for its use it non-stick pans. They have been designed to withstand the stresses of space travel. There are no chips or magnetic strips as they would be damaged by cosmic radiation. There are no sharp edges as they could do damage if they were to accidentally float free in zero gravity.
Although completely arbitrary, the Quid's exchange rate is currently 6.25 pounds.
Space travel may be closer than we think.
Virgin Galactic is now taking reservations for travel in 2009 on their SpaceShip II. The price tag is $200,000, with a 10% downpayment required at time of booking.
